HISTORY of the Thirteenth would be incomplete without a reference, however brief, to the individual shooting of the men who have made the battalion famous for its marksman-ship. Of note; 'Have by their skill contributed to the successful career of the Thirteenth as a shooting regiment" When one considers the fact that the winning of the " Queen's Prize " at Bisley means that the successful competitor must prove himself the best marksman from a picked 2,000 men, a fair realization of the skill required for such a performance will be obtained. Many examples to include: In 1889 Major Zealand won the battalion championship and his name runs concurrently with that of Major Ross (F.B.) through all the prize lists of the D.R.A for many years Lieut. W. L. Ross, who made such a gallant fight for the Oueen's Prize in 1897. (Individually WLR finished 4th amongst all Bisley competitors of the British Empire Games of 1897). 1897 was the (60th) diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria's reign, (1837-1897) and considered to be a much sought after accomplishment. In 1881 Major F. B. Ross first distinguished himself by winning the battalion championship, a feat which he repeated in 1883 and 1890. FBR. was the older brother of WLR.
